Character Background[]

Professor Jonathan Crane was taunted and bullied as a child because of his skinniness and rather small frame. He was obsessed with the phobias and fears of the human mind. Most incarnations of the character have him working at Gotham University and coming from an abusive and religious family. At the University he was fired for various reasons (such as firing a gun in a classroom, but most commonly using other faculty members and students as test subjects). Whichever the case, Crane was fired from the University. Angered by this, Professor Crane donned a costume consisting of ragged clothes, bag for a head and wide-brimmed hat of a scarecrow and exacted his payback on the gentlemen who had fired him as a "Scarecrow." He used a special drug which stimulated the phobias of the mind, resulting in visions of what one fears the most when exposed to it.

Since then, Scarecrow had come to blows with Batman on a number of occasions. Most of his schemes often revolve around either gaining more money for his research, obsession with fear or using live humans as unwilling test-subjects in his twisted experiments. The "fear-gas" that Scarecrow uses, much like Joker's Joker toxin, ultimately knows no bounds in shape or name. Several times, it has been featured in either gas or dart form, and its effects range from visions that last for no more than a few minutes to full-blown hallucinations that can last for hours and leave scars on the mental psyche. Trained by Ra's al Ghul, he was also great in combat. In some versions, Scarecrow practiced Karate while in others he never gained much psychical skills and hired goons to do most of the psychical work.

Ironically enough but understandable, Scarecrow views himself as a highly intelligent and cultured individual and often demands respect as a Professor. In several of his incarnations, he himself also suffers from either a fear of birds or a fear of bats, making him even more vulnerable to Batman.

Video Game Appearances[]

Lego Batman: The Videogame[]

LEGO Scarecrow

Upon escaping from Arkham Asylum, Scarecrow teamed up with the Joker and his gang in an attempt to blow up Gotham Cathedral and spread Joker's deadly laughing gas all over the city, practically killing everyone. He is first seen playing cards with Mad Hatter and Killer Moth at the Joker's base, however Scarecrow is visibly annoyed with Moth paying more attention to the lamplight than the card game and scares him as a result. Later in the scene, he slaps him for the same reason. Riding in a custom-made biplane, he assisted the Joker in the aerial battle against the Batwings but was ultimately defeated. The biplane crashed into The Joker's Helicopter, and both were destroyed.

The villains themselves, however, were not harmed, as they had come prepared with massive balloons that served as parachutes (Joker's was in the shape of a pony while Crane's was pumpkin-styled). The pair landed inside Gotham Art Gallery, where Scarecrow was detained, but Joker just laughed at him and left.

Scarecrow is last seen inside his cell at Arkham Asylum, mimicking an actual scarecrow on a wooden frame (complete with several birds roosting on his arms and hat).

In DS, The Scarecrow appears in Chapter 3 as a boss in the 4th adventure or mission: "Art Gallery". After his defeat, The Joker betrays him like on the console version.

Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes[]

3 8 Batman2 CharGrid

In Lego Batman 2 Scarecrow is an antagonist in a boss battle in Level 4. At the end of the mission Scarecrow will use his fear gas to grow into a big monster which will make him invincible for a while. When defeated he will be stepped on, but will appear as a free roam boss located in Joker's Funland in the Pumpkin. Defeating him again will make him be available to buy as a playable character.

LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham[]

The Scarecrow, like other characters like Two-Face, or Commissioner Gordon is only available in the game with the Dark Knight DLC pack. It is the Scarecrow from the Dark Knight Trilogy.

LEGO DC Super-Villains[]

After his rescue from the police thanks to some laughing gas, Scarecrow once again teams up with Joker to raid the GCPD vault of their villainous tools, alongside Riddler and Clayface. They are later joined by Catwoman and Two-Face during their unintentional detour into the Iceberg Lounge, where Penguin also joins them in their escapades. While in the lounge, Scarecrow constructs himself a Scare-o-Plane, which is later shot down by a turret controlled by Penguin.

Sometime later, Scarecrow returns to the Legion of Doom's headquarters. There, he excitedly joins Grodd, Killer Frost, and the Rookie to rescue Sinestro from the Green Lanterns at Oa, since he and Sinestro share a common interest in fear.

Appearance[]

Scarecrow is tall and scrawny and his costume resembles his alias, consisting of a pointed, wide-brimmed hat, which actually resembles a witch's hat, wears a bag on his head and most of his clothes consist of shabby brown set of rags. The most striking part of his appearance is his eyes, which are presented as large, round, and bright red, like burning coals. To add to his frightful appearance, a row of stitches runs across his mouth, making it seem like his mouth is stitched together.

In the DS version of the game, Scarecrow's "civilian" identity, Professor Jonathan Crane, is available as a separate character. He can also turn into Scarebeast.

Abilities and Equipment[]

Scarecrown-BiPlane

Scarecrow

Unlike most of the villains, Scarecrow is totally unarmed in combat except for his fear gas. Unknown to most of his enemies, Scarecrow has developed a special martial art that employs full use of his spindly frame and flailing extremities, but his expertise in psychiatry is easily where his true strength lies. Much like Two-Face and Mad Hatter, he is able to implant demolitions-canisters and like Hatter and Riddler, can hypnotise guards to open doors. It should also be interesting to note that when falling from a tall height, Scarecrow will vanish into brown dust and only his hat will remain on the floor for a split second, before he will reemerge from out of nowhere. How he can do this is never explained.

The fear gas that he carries can only be deployed near an opponent. When it is deployed, it appears as a small-sized brown cloud, or better yet, dust, that temporarily renders the opponent incapable of movement or attack. The opponent will hold his face in fear, presumably from their worst fears coming true. It is highly useful when overwhelmed by attackers, or for taking a free hit on an opponent. It cannot be used on more than one individual at a time, however.

Scarecrow is also the owner of an incredibly fast biplane. The biplane is capable of towing and firing special torpedoes carrying fear gas.

Trivia[]

  • In the DS versions he has his own henchmen known as: Scarecrow Goons, dressed in skeleton outfits who are similar to those like Fear Goons.
  • In the DS version of the game, Scarecrow is immune to toxins and can lob pumpkin grenades similar to the Green Goblin. In cutscenes, he can also be seen wielding a large scythe, but it is never used in gameplay.
  • His character select icon has his head coloured completely yellow for some reason.
  • Him and Mad Hatter get betrayed by the Joker in the DS version of the game, when Harley Quinn rides on her Hammer Truck and picks up the Joker while Scarecrow gets left behind, angrily.
